In this paper, I will focus on how the US and EU GMOs (genetically modified organisms) policies play out within the developing world policy contexts, namely African countries. This is done by engaging with key and influential policy literature which promotes or condemns either the US or European policies. The purpose of comparing policy discussions surrounding the US and EU policies on GMOs and their impact on African countries is twofold. First, to present different policy explanations of both stances and how they play out within the African context. Second, by focusing on dominant policy explanations of EU stance, I critique the policy literature which reduces the EU stance on GMOs to being “hostile” towards GM (genetic modification) technology and “imperialist” for forcing its policy stance on Africa (Paarlberg 2008).
