While Extension Services have been traditionally associated with the state’s designated land-grant universities, its’ spirit lives on through applied, community-based research that investigates underlying processes and generates new knowledge through dissemination to local stakeholders. Independently of College of Agriculture based Extension Services, public higher education, including APLU and the National Engagement Scholarship Consortium have created an academic social movement focused on applied, engaged community-based research from the periphery to a core mission of the institution. Emphasis is on community inclusive co-creation research and engagement processes. Providing a shared reading ahead of time, Fitzgerald, Bruns, Sonka, Furco, and Swanson (2012), we hope to share fruitful discussion on (a) realigning the rural studies and extension literature, (b) providing a broader university-community partnership, and (c) demonstrating a reciprocal and mutually beneficial relationship that embraces processes and values of civil democracy.
