Panel Description: While increasing attention has been given to rural poverty vis-à-vis urban poverty, less attention has been paid to the heterogeneity of rural poverty itself, especially the effects of place and space in producing variations across geography. Seizing on our time in Portland, this panel explores how rural poverty does—and perhaps does not—vary in the Western United States. We hope to explore the demographic and spatial differences of the Western U.S., as well as the qualitative experiences of those in poverty in the West. We hope the discussion spurs ideas for future research about the effects of place and space on rural poverty, and ultimately, on strategies for addressing it.
