Evidencing the contribution of social enterprise in a local health and social care system: a conceptual framework

Francesca Calo

Yunus Centre for Social Business and Health/ Glasgow Caledonian University

Francesca joined the Yunus Centre in October 2013. She is currently undertaking a PhD under the supervision of Professor Cam Donaldson (Director of Studies), Dr Simone Baglioni and Professor Simon Teasdale. The PhD aims at understanding how can social enterprises measure and demonstrate their social impact in comparison with the other providers (such as for profit organisations, public sector and other non profits). In particular she will focus on the following three more specific questions:• What does the literature, in the form of a systematic analysis, tell us about the quality of the evidence base with respect to whether social enterprises or the third sector organisations provide improved outcomes in comparison with private for profit and public providers in health and social care systems?• What is the feasibility of improving the evidence base via a controlled comparative study of a community-based, health focussed social enterprise initiative?• What mechanisms and environment support (or impede) the production of positive outcomes from such social enterprise environment?Prior to joining the Yunus Centre, Francesca received her MSc (International Management) from Fudan University, Shanghai and Bocconi University Milan. She worked as a practitioner in a social enterprise for one year and as a research fellow in CERGAS- Bocconi University for two years.
