If a human factors specialist doesn’t publish their research, does it make a sound? Publishing a book can be an intimidating endeavor, especially with the plethora of publishing options and the importance of disseminating your work. This paper will demystify the book publishing process, from the first approach to a press through the proposal and review process, on to book production and promotion.
Demonstrating that you’ve spotted—and filled—a gap in the literature will impress a busy acquisitions editor, so this paper will start with a discussion of the current state of human factors research, primarily through the lens of Ashgate’s aviation and human factors & ergonomics lists. Next comes more research, to determine where your work best fits and how to tailor your approach; this paper will outline how to craft a book proposal, with essential do’s and don’ts to start your nascent relationship with a publisher on the right foot. Peer review conventions, timelines and etiquette will be discussed, along with the fine print of the book contract.
Other steps in and aspects of the book publishing process to be covered include:
• Adhering to manuscript delivery guidelines and timelines, including permissions issues
• Working with desk editorial and production departments: how long it takes, how many rounds of edits are reasonable, and how much design input you’ll have
• Promoting your new book: what to expect from the publisher, what to do yourself, and tips on how to become the marketer you may not have known you are
The nature of human factors research means that getting published isn’t just vital for your career—it improves and even saves lives. A good publisher’s principal aim is to get your research out there and make it shine (and yes, to sell enough books to keep the lights on). This paper’s principal aim is to help make you an informed and successful partner in achieving that goal.
