Cold gas dynamic spray technology, or cold spray, emerged as a practical technology in the 1980’s from the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk. Thirty years later, the commercial implementation of his technology is expanding at a fast pace in the Aerospace Industry. CenterLine is a world leader in design and manufacturing of industrial downstream injection cold spray equipment. In downstream injection, the spray powder is introduced downstream the nozzle throat, at the diverging low pressure side of the nozzle. Today’s downstream injection equipment can operate at conditions of pressure and temperature that enables the deposition of a wide range of materials for corrosion protection, restoration, repair, and additive manufacturing. This presentation reviews working principles, latest developments, and examples of current commercial applications in the Aerospace Industry. It also describes the potential of cold spray for the metallization of polymeric substrates, an area of interest to the increasing number of manufacturers that use carbon-reinforced composite materials.
