In this research study, I explore the effects of strategic decisions by microfinance institutions and institutional factors which influence eventual firm performance. I posit new theory on how variation in types of microfinance programs interacts with tribal characteristics and causes variation in firm outcomes as a result. Moreover, I argue that firm performance with respect to poverty reduction is partially moderated by the socioeconomic characteristics of the clients based on tribes, asset ownership, and who acts as the head of the household.
