The research problem is that private higher education (PHE) institutions in Botswana operate
in a highly regulated environment. The objective of this study is to examine the effect of
family ownership and management on knowledge management (KM) practices in selected
institutions in Botswana.
The study adopted a quantitative case study design and collected data through a
questionnaire. The population targeted came to 670 and sample size was 350. Data was
analysed through various statistical measures such as the Structural Equation Modelling
(SEM) in the form of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and multiple regression analysis.
The results of the study revealed that the family ownership and management system was
inhibiting KM practices in the selected institutions. It should be noted that the state of KM in
organisations operating in an uncertain environment can be enhanced if the leadership
carefully controls the family-owned setting as it prevents effective KM practices.
