Specifying the Solar Energetic Particle Hazard Inside Geosynchronous

Shawn Young

AFRL

Dr. Shawn Young began full-time study of the space environment shortly after finishing his undergraduate work at Brigham Young University when he took his current position at the Air Force Research Laboratory.  His graduate work, which focused on transient energetic particle populations in the magnetosphere, was later completed at Dartmouth College.  While at AFRL he has participated in and led efforts to evaluate, upgrade and provide new operational and research models of the space environment.

Abstract

Current solar energetic particle (SEP) hazard specifications are based on observations of the interplanetary SEP flux at geosynchronous and, because of Earth's magnetic shielding, they only directly apply to the Earth's... [ view full abstract ]
