SPRINTS - Space Radiation Intelligence System

Alec Engell

NextGen Federal Systems

Mr. Engell received his B.A. from Harvard College in 2008 in Earth and Planetary Science. In 2006, he began working in the field of solar physics at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) specializing in data analysis, image processing, and magnetic modeling. In 2009, he was hired full time to work at the CfA High Energy Astrophysics Division working on solar flares, automatic detection algorithms (polarity inversion line), and magnetic modeling (non-linear force free fields). Mr. Engell has also worked extensively in solar data analysis of ACE, GOES, AIA, HMI, XRT, SOT, RHESSI, and TRACE. He is a member of the American Commercial Space Weather Association’s Executive Committee and recently joined the AMS Space Weather Committee. He was PI for a NASA contract in 2014 to develop a new and improved method of forecasting SEPs. In 2015, he was hired by Weather Analytics as a consulting scientist in space weather and became their Director of Upper Atmospheric Storms. He worked with large volumes of terrestrial and space weather data and developed predictive models, model validations and delivered customer-oriented products for operational services. In 2016 he joined NextGen as PI of a NASA STTR for improving SEP forecasting. While currently focusing on the developing cutting-edge technologies and applications to improve technological space-weather resilience through commercial opportunities, Mr. Engell is a physics PhD candidate at Montana State University for solar physics.

Abstract

Capabilities to predict onset and time-profiles of solar-driven events including solar X-ray flares, solar energetic particles (SEP), coronal mass ejections (CME), and high speed streams (HSS) are critical in assessing their... [ view full abstract ]
