Scientific computing pushes both hardware and software to the very limits of what is capable. Unfortunately, this is almost always an afterthought. Once you have working code, you need to be able to profile that code to figure out what you can and should optimize. Attendees should already be comfortable reading and writing Python code, and a laptop would be useful to work through the examples.
