Despite having an effective security awareness training program, impostor email threats (also referred to as business email compromise or CEO fraud) continue to serve as a major challenge for Canadian higher education institutions. The recent $11.8-million vendor-impersonation scam against a Canadian university is only the latest high-profile social-engineering fraud in what has become a multibillion-dollar criminal industry .These attacks have collectively scammed victims out of more than $5.1 billion dollars globally since 2015. These messages are sent in low volume, but the small few that succeed can yield millions of dollars in fraudulent transfers, leakage of confidential information as well as intellectual property.
