The traditional communities living in Protected Areas are finding in Community Based Tourism (CBT) an income alternative, an opportunity to value their own culture and a way to integrate young people into the local way of life
There is no ready recipe, solution are emerging from more traditional ways where the visitor experiences the local way of life, to others where communities work in partnership with tour operators to promote sun and beach experiences.
This session will present two case studies from National Protected Areas of Brazil: one from the Amazon Region and another from the Coastal Areas. The session will discuss different strategies where communities and protected areas promote intercultural experiences, quality of life, valorization of the history and culture of these populations, as well as, the sustainable use of the resources though tourist products.
The first case study presents Interaction with Fauna in Anavilhanas National Park. The protected area developed strategies of tourism with Amazon River dolphins (Iniageoffrensis) managed by local community. The project promoted dialogue between representatives of residents of Novo Airão with organized civil society, tourism trade and government institutions in order to offer a sustainable activity.
The second case study is the Nhandereko Community Based Tourism Network that occurs in the Cairuçu Area of Environmental Protection. The case promotes community based tourism with traditional communities of fishermen (caiçaras), traditional communities of slave descendent (quilombolas) and indigenous communities of the Region of Paraty.
