The U@Uni HSC Tutorial Scheme works with University of Technology Sydney’s (UTS) targeted schools in South Western Sydney to assist Year 11 and 12 students to improve their academic performance and broaden their educational aspirations. UTS students employed in the project are trained to build academic capacity, delivering fun and engaging school based tutorial sessions as well as role modelling the attitudes and skills that lead to success in the HSC and in the first year of university. Many of the UTS students involved are from South Western Sydney themselves and an increasing number have attended our targeted schools. The Program is part of UTS’s Widening Participation Strategy and is managed by the Equity and Diversity Unit.
The Scheme has been comprehensively evaluated over the last two years with strong evidence indicating that the project is contributing towards improved academic outcomes for high school student participants in areas such as academic performance and confidence, school engagement and motivation to attend university. Equally, UTS students working in the project have reported development of valued graduate attributes such as leadership, communication skills and problem solving skills.
In this presentation you will:
• Learn how UTS is recruiting, training and developing the skills and attributes of the UTS students working in the project.
• Find out more about our evaluation framework, including how we are collecting data and measuring academic outcomes for high school students.
• Hear about our results, including what UTS students working in the project have reported about their development of valued graduate attributes.
