Background/context
While universities offer incentives to encourage prospective students from rural and remote areas, the demographic continues to be underrepresented, especially in metro universities. One of the contributing factors to students not considering university is a lack of knowledge, personal tertiary experience, and support by key influencers such as parents. This presentation outlines the need for a holistic approach in educating students in rural and remote areas on their post school options by engaging and educating both students and influencers such as parents and communities.
The initiative/practice
The LEAP-Rural Students University Experience program provides students with an opportunity to navigate different pathways to university and familiarise them with university.
Engaging with organisations that have pre-existing relationships in rural and remote communities.
Method
Each of the students who attended the LEAP-Rural Students University Experience program was asked to complete a pre-trip and post-trip survey. Each of the accompanying teachers was also asked to complete a survey at the conclusion of the University Experience. Longitudinal results from 2010- 2014 will be presented in this paper. Preliminary results from engagement with parents and communities will also be presented.
Evidence of effectiveness
Students enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about university life, and to see how universities are run:
85 % of the students reported the visit had changed their ideas about university in a positive way – believed it would be more affordable than they thought, it seemed more fun than expected and that there was a much wider range of courses available.
Positive feedback from parents on increased awareness of university study options for their children.
