Consideration of academic progress at AUT University for TEC priority groups:
Success in university studies is yet to be understood from the perspective of Māori and Pasifika learners. Without this we cannot be sure that our delivery of learning and teaching are successful for our students. Further to our study made in 2013 we have continued this line of enquiry by further analyzing participation and retention rates of these academic programmes to consider how the University is contributing to Māori and Pasifika academic student success.
Analysis of data from 2009-2012 showed that there were increases in Māori and Pasifika academic student success rates. This further project seeks to consider further progress over the period of 2013-2014 and how other University equity initiatives may have contributed to academic outcomes.
The demystifying of cultural practice/s to a wider audience, could aid change to further support and increase learning by our Māori and Pasifika whānau. Using the University’s strategic plan as the foundation for this project, the aim is to apply objective and intent to support two of the identified target groups towards higher success rates overall.
1 NZ Tertiary Education Commission, government
2 Māori, indigenous people of New Zealand
3 Pasifika, people of Pacific Island desent.
4 Whānau, Māori word for family and extended family
5 Target groups identified in AUT Strategic Plan: Māori, Pasifika, Disablities
