In this paper, we provide a classification of different types of distrust and a conceptualization of their respective consequences. We then focus on potential positive consequences of distrust, the so called bright side of distrust. These positive consequences lie in avoided traits and improved opportunities due to the distrustor’s distrust in a distrustee. To further illustrate this concept, we take a case study approach and analyze several examples in different contexts. Our results on the positive impact of distrust lead us to consider distrust as a (potential) source of innovation in organizational settings.
