As an initial step towards performance assessment of BIM projects, this study focuses on identifying the factors that are critical for the success of a BIM project. A research methodology is outlined in this study to identify critical success factors (CSFs) for BIM projects by adopting an empirical approach. A questionnaire is designed by studying the influencing factors (IFs) identified from literature and domain experts. Questionnaire surveys and focus group meetings were performed among Taiwanese BIM experts. Statistical analyses such as data summary, reliability analysis, respondents’ data summary and t-test are employed to examine the collected data. In this research, thirty-eight CSFs are identified for delivering BIM projects in Taiwan. This study reveals that it is insufficient to merely ask the question, “Which factors are most important to BIM project success?” With the consideration of project life cycles, it can be seen that the relative importance of the CSFs is subjected to dramatic changes at different phases in the BIM project implementation process. This research is not only capable of helping small team of experts to identify CSFs but also generally applicable for identifying CSFs in other countries.
