Out of all the emerging technology today, artificial intelligence (AI) such as machine learning, deep learning and so on is a new technology that is on track to revolutionize the construction industry. The fourth industrial revolution is slated to fundamentally change the way existing technologies impact how we operate. The construction field is the same situation as well. Artificial intelligence which is one of the primary technologies in the 4th industrial revolution cannot be defined only one parameter. However, the technology is based on collecting and analyzing vast amounts of information or data that is called ‘Big data’. As a result, it has become more important to think about how to extract and use information than before. The construction industry has also gotten used to utilize information through ‘BIM (Building Information Modeling)’. BIM within the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry has been developing since the early 2000s and has become a key technology in the construction industry. Although BIM is considered an advanced technology in the construction field, there are practical limitations to utilizing building information as opposed to the AI technology, which has wider application. Currently, we can access a lot of building information in real time due to the exponential development of technologies like sensors. For this reason, artificial intelligence technology which is based on information processing and analysis can be applied in various construction fields. This paper uses literature review for trend analysis. Firstly, it classifies what kinds of artificial intelligence technologies are available and then analyzes how each technology has been studied for use in construction fields. Finally, this paper also identifies the future potential of its deployment and will provide research direction in terms of artificial intelligence in construction fields.
