Nigeria is highly prone to noise pollution due to high concentration of people in most residential and commercial neighbourhoods. This study was carried out to measure the noise level at selected residential neighbourhoods and commercial centres at selected satellite towns within Abuja the Federal Capital Territory where the Urban Poor are concentrated. The noise level at the workplace of printing press, grinding machine operators and social centres (football match viewing centres) were studied using both class 1 and class 2 Sound Level Meters. The obtained results were compared with the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) recommendations to determine if standards were being adhered to. The average obtained for the three categories (between 103.6Dba and 120.3 dBA and more in some instances) showed that standards were grossly exceeded and thus highlighted the need for strict noise management strategies.
