Heat Shock Protein 27: Novel Therapy for Modulating Atherosclerosis

Edward O'Brien, MD

University of Calgary/Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta

Dr. O'Brien established his career in 1994 at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, with a clinical practice that focused on coronary intervention and a research program grounded in the Vascular Biology Laboratory (VBL). The VBL is a basic research laboratory that uses molecular techniques to study the biology of atherosclerosis, as well as the response of the vessel wall to interventions such as stenting.

The VBL is supported by peer review grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Since 1994, Dr. O'Brien has been the Principal Investigator of more than 20 research grants that have attracted >$7 million in peer-reviewed research support. Along the way, his laboratory has trained more than 30 graduate students / post-doctoral fellows and published over 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts / book chapters.
