Determination of trace elements and their concentrations in clay-balls: problem of geophagia practice in Ghana

Emmanuel Arhin

University for Development Studies

Emmanuel Arhin is one of Ghanaian’s leading exploration geologists, regolith geoscientist, an exploration geochemist, medical geologist and a senior lecturer at the University or Development Studies. I have completed research to understand the properties and formation of complex regolith as a basis for the development of appropriate and effective geochemical exploration techniques, both in Ghana and similar terrains elsewhere. Geological and human induced processes also polluting the environment whose consequences are impacting on human health are my concern. I am currently involved in medical geology research in Ghana with the intention to prevent many primary health issues. I am the Chapter Leader of the International Medical Geology Association in Ghana and also the Head of Department of Earth and Environmental Science Department of University for Development Studies at Faculty of Applied Sciences, Navrongo Campus from 2007-2010 and from 2013 to present.

Abstract

Trace element contents in clay-balls intentionally ingested by geophagia practitioners in Ghana were studied. Ten samples of 100 g weight were sub sampled from 1400 g. The remaining 400 g samples were kept as library samples.... [ view full abstract ]
