Violence against children is a global challenge. Child protection services have tended to focus resources on developing policies and programmes that focus on appropriate responses to child abuse and neglect. However more attention is now being paid to the importance of preventing the abuse, neglect and exploitation of children. There is also some evidence to indicate that preventing violence against children contributes to the prevention of violence in other interpersonal relationships in later childhood and adulthood. The focus on prevention has shifted attention to the role of parents and parenting. This workshop will provide an overview of evidence collected by ISPCAN on "Positive Parenting: Preventing Violence Against Children" and engage participants in a discussion on the concept of "positive parenting" and programmes that develop the capacity of parents and caregivers to parent their children positively and without violence
