Background
Pregnancy and childbirth, from normal events of woman’s life, nowadays appear almost under the domain of a “fear/risk/safety” model, which widespread outcome is the raising of cesarean section rate, especially in Italy (C-section rate is 36 %, with huge differences among regions). Guidelines for clinicians and information booklets for the women were licensed by NHS and Ministry of Health but no education program promoting was thought and applied to the medical profession as a whole so far.
The Italian College of Doctors and the Ministry of Health committed an e-learning course applied to all Italian physicians, which aim was to provide update education regarding “safety childbirth”. A progressive shift from a “safety childbirth model” towards a new and more appropriate meaning of “safety”, was built through an interdisciplinary education program.
Objectives of such a model are :
-to give back the childbirth experience to medical profession as a whole
-to revisit the current risk/safety culture
-to disseminate the Midwifery model to all caregivers
Methods
The e-learning course will cover a wide number of topics, being developed in 16 chapters (i.e.,strategies to reducing C-section rate, birthplaces, labor and birth, shared decision making, revisiting oxytocin effects). Authors invited to contribute are either Italian or European (exactly half and half), either specialists or midwives.
Results
Considering the high risk culture and the high C-section rate in Italy, addressing the whole Medical Italian Association to an interdisciplinary, Midwifery educational project, can results in a more effective outcome than using a standard specialistic model. The program will be edited and provided on-line, according with the Italian Ministry of Public Health by October 2017.
Discussion and conclusion
An Italian and an English version of the manual will be provided, to allow a more feasible dissemination of the education program across Europe.
