As a prerequisite for meeting the required Maryland State standards, our school adopted a boxed curriculum set. As a result, greater emphasis was placed upon a project approach in the classroom. Combined with our enthusiasm for environmental issues this led to an interest in examining how best to develop educational experiences across learning centers and skill sets, with the intentional outcome of creating an energetic and flexible curriculum, suitable for all classroom settings.
The areas we examine include:
1. Introducing recycling to 2 – 5 year olds and conducting Circle times centered on the environment.
Circle time with Recycling: 1,2,3.
2. Examining how to effectively develop and maintain composting, and vermiculture habitats providing a rich environment for small creatures, for children to explore with magnifying glasses.
3. Creating engaging activities supporting math, literacy, fine and gross motor experiences. For example, measuring worms with small uniform cubes and recording data.
4. We have extended the project and have set up on site a monarch butterfly waystation sponsored by the National Resource Defense Council. Children helped with planning the garden and with selecting and planting monarch feeder and nectar plants. The pre-K children will be participating in a yearlong project of researching, observing and documenting monarchs and other species in the area. All children will help to maintain the garden. These two projects combined are teaching children about sustainability, and respect and responsibility for the environment.
