Since 2010, a major and rapid devolution of conservation to the local level has occurred in Kenya. This devolution was already taking place, but accelerated rapidly with the enactment of Kenya’s new constitution, which devolved significant power and resources to the county level throughout the country. In that time, the number of conservancies in the country has grown from 40 to over 200. Kenyans established twelve regional and one national organization to support individual conservancies throughout the country. This session will describe this revolution and its challenges and successes. The speakers will then put this rapid expansion of community-based conservation in a regional and global context.
