Zainal Salam (M’1990) received the B.S. degree from University of California, Chico (1985), M.E.E. from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (1989) and Ph.D. from the University of Birmingham, U.K (1997). He has been a Lecturer at UTM for 30 years and is now a Professor of Power Electronics and Renewable Energy at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. Dr. Salam has been working on several research and consulting projects in the area of battery-powered converters, PV systems enhancements and multilevel inverters. Currently, he is the Director of the Inverter Quality Control Centre at UTM which is responsible for testing photovoltaic inverters that are to be connected to the local utility grid. Dr. Salam served the Editor of the IEEE TRANSACTION SUSTAINABLE ENERGY (2011-2013). His research interests include all areas of power electronics, renewable energy, power systems and machine control. In his spare time, Dr. Salam travels widely around the globe to cater for the needy under various NGO activities.
