I entered JR East in 2005 and worked as a car maintenance worker, a train conductor, a train driver and a dispatcher before moving to the current position at the safety research lab. I also studied human factors at the graduate school of University of Wisconsin-Madison from 2011 to 2013.

Speeding and SPAD are two most common incidents which often resulted from train drivers’ errors, where lapses tend to be involved in Speeding while slips and mistakes in SPAD. These incidents usually occur because their non technical skills (NTS) are limited rather they lack necessary technical skills. To improve drivers’ NTS, a new education program has been developed which focuses more on human factors perspectives compared to traditional trainings. The framework of the program consists of three phases: (1) learning from error experiences, (2) understanding error mechanisms and coping strategies and (3) thinking of their own error-prevention actions. Driving simulators allow drivers to face Speeding and SPAD inducing situations and experience these incidents in the simulator settings, getting them motivated to brush up their own NTS from the experiences. Speeding inducing scenario has been developed first along with this framework and showed positive effects on drivers. Based on this result, SPAD scenario has also been developed and now under a pilot test, showing positive reactions and learning effects as well.
