As a d8 precious metal, platinum(II) has become an intriguing metal to study due to its unique square planar formation and interesting physical and spectroscopic properties. In particular, platinum complexes with chlorine atoms in the cis formation, such as cisplatin, have been studied extensively due to their many potential applications. In an attempt to develop a liquid crystalline system with a platinum(II) core, we synthesized a platinum(II) bipyridine complex that displayed many interesting photophysical properties. This 6-2PtCl2 complex existed in red, orange, and yellow crystals of various sizes and textures with only the orange crystals being luminescent. In an attempt to better understand the aggregation of the complexes, spectroscopic and computational studies were conducted. In particular, 1H NMR studies of the complexes in various concentrations, solvents, and temperatures were conducted and the data was fit using a monomer-dimer model. The data obtained using this model indicated that the 6-2PtCl2 complexes aggregated differently depending on the concentration and the solvent used.
