In this talk I will discuss my most recent body of photographic work, Nowhere to go, nothing to shoot. The title implies a feeling of paralysis as images in this collection address concerns and pose questions regarding photography's evolution in an increasingly photo-savvy society. Artist block is discussed at individual and collective levels, exploring the multitude of trepidations and anxieties that accompany image-making in the 21st century. Through use of collaged materials in addition to photographic prints, Nowhere to go, nothing to shoot furthers a conversation of contemporary photography's representation.
The presentation will touch on banality as seen in photography – defining what makes an image boring versus aesthetically pleasing. Circumstances in which a seemingly dull photograph becomes important, perhaps even beautiful, are of special significance to the body of work. Images in this collection delve into the abject, examining the qualities that images take on when they are abstracted through a falsified identity behind the lens. It is a rendering of the swirl of pictures and exist in our heads and everywhere else.
