ToEnvironmental injustice is a concept that exists around the United States through the research done in the 1950s and so on. In this capstone I will be exploring the existence of environmental injustices occurring in Brownsville Texas through the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). By using GIS, the location of polluting facilities listed under the Toxic Release Inventory through the Environmental Protection Agency are plotted to analyze if the correlation of polluting facilities are disproportionately located within minority neighborhoods. It is found that these facilities are not disproportionately located and show no significance of environmental injustice existing. A small stepping stone of proving if people of color are disportionately carrying the burden of environmental hazardous and lack equal representation in environmental planning.
