Hammonasset Beach is a place of change. Fresh and saltwater mix amidst marsh grass, animals move with the seasons and tides, and glacial boulders stand above slowly eroding sand. Last year, construction began for several new buildings, including an improved space for Meig’s Point Nature Center. This summer, I worked on my own design for the nature center as an independent project. In my design I hoped to capture this sense of change through its geometry and the use of multiple levels, to blur the boundary between built and natural environments, and to provide a welcoming center for education, art, conservation, and community.
