Using an oral-history style interview, this video examines the history of a Chiquitano indigenous community outside of Santa Cruz, Bolivia through the eyes of five elders in the community. This simple, short documentary looks at the history of slavery that lasted until the period of agrarian reform in 1952, the process of building the community post-liberation and the hopes that these elders have for the future of the community. It touches on themes of slavery, the agrarian reforms implemented under Victor Paz Estensoro’s government, self-determination, rural development, migration, education, and discrimination. This film was directed and produced by the presenter as an independent study for School for International Training's program based in Cochabamba, Bolivia. She spent one month collecting interviews. The presentation will include a twelve minute video and three minute question-and-answer period.
