This presentation explores the dynamic and yet complex relationship between African Tradition Religion (ATR) and Christianity [Pentecostalism] in African context. Many observers have forecasted that Africa could be the future of Pentecostalism since the religion is thriving there. But, while Pentecostalism is on the rise in the region, ATR practices are still intact and fiercely competing with Christianity. The bond between ATR and African culture is inextricable and that is why early European missionaries were unsuccessful in trying to separate the two. As a result of the legacy of colonization and the adoption of Western missionary Christianity, Africans today are divided on whether to keep ATR beliefs or abandon them. I will argue for a dialogue among Africans, beginning with an understanding of the similarities and differences between the two religions. “Syncretism” will be proposed as a way Africans might consider by accepting Christianity while keeping their culture and heritage. I will further argue that a strong Pentecostal church could be built on some aspects of ATR. Major points that will be discussed include: early encounter between ATR and missionaries; misconceptions on ATR, comparison between ATR and Christianity and aspects of ATR that could help the Christian church in Africa.
