This architectural studies thesis project is to design a political action center for the Addison County in Middlebury (at the triangular space in front of the Twilight Hall where the old municipal building was.) My project is named "between water and garden." Inspired by the Middlebury Fall, I decided to use water as the predominant material to isolate the project from the hustles and bustles of the surrounding world, creating a cloister of political discussions and reflections. Buildings in this project submerge into or emerge out from water. They also follow the shape of the site to create an internal garden in the middle. Therefore, whenever people are in the project, they are walking in between water and garden. Water is also used to create different levels of privacy in the spaces, with the most public space (the conference room) emerging completely out of water and the more private and secluded spaces (the library and the research center) under water.
The poster will show how I gradually arrived at my final design. An interesting part of it will use a piano piece, Clair de Lune, to illustrate the four stages of spatial experiences in this project.
