A set of three oil paintings depicts the three social groups - called "estates" during the French Revolution of 1789. The three estates included the nobility, the clergy, and the peasants; economic and social inequality between the groups, in part, led to the uprisings of the historic French Revolution.
The first painting depicts the storm coming for the nobility of France (elevated in both status and economic power - here, literally elevated upon a cliff). The second painting depicts the clergy upon the revolution, also showing stormy skies despite some sun peeking through (metaphorically God's light). The final painting depicts the anger and revolution of the peasants in this period of time.
These three oil paintings connect to a historical fiction creative writing thesis called Hear Me Roar. This story discusses social constructs, environmental injustice, and the nature of revolution, set in France during the revolution.
