This display presents the process and final product of an independent study in scenic design for the play, On an Average Day, written by Middlebury graduate John Kolvenbach. This design appeared in the Hepburn Zoo Blackbox Theatre in the spring of 2016.
On an Average Day is a play about two brothers who were abandoned by their single father as children. While the elder, Jack, eventually left to start his own family, the younger, Robert still lives in their childhood home, which has fallen into a state of squalor and decay. The play takes place in the kitchen of this home.
This design aimed to deliver changing senses of containment and exposure within the Zoo, to reflect Robert's loss of the feeling of protection within this childhood home. This sense of contained space also sought to create a close audience actor relationship that forced the viewer into the action.
