The commercial exploitation of new knowledge created in universities has become of central importance to universities and to the governments that fund university research. Despite the importance of technology transfer to national economies, limited research has been directed at understanding the key resource development processes involved in bringing innovations to the market. The lack of comprehensive data poses challenges to researchers seeking to independently study the effectiveness of the technology transfer system. This study aims to explore the development process of academic entrepreneur following the research stage of an idea through initial commercialisation. To understand the problem, the focus of this study will address the following research question: What are the critical resource junctures in the development of Irish based spinoff ventures?
A central contribution of the project aims to extend the Resource based View in order to address the dominant problems arising along the evolutionary growth path of spinoff ventures. The study aims to also provide insights of both university technology offices and entrepreneurship programs can better support the unique process and requirements of academic ventures and improve their chances of successfully reaching the marketplace and contribute to national economies.
