The paper presents an analysis of the startup ecosystem effectiveness at the territorial level, providing an insight on institutional based supports able to influence technology startup creation in a Region.
Numerous studies (e.g. Feld, 2012; Chapman, 2011) sustain the idea that the community’s entrepreneur support network, and so the organizations and institutions that make up its “ecosystem”, is critical for new technology firms to succeed.
As a territory seeks to successfully cultivate entrepreneurship, a keen understanding of how different players are able to affect startup creation is likely to make both public and private sector behaviour more effective, identifying also potential policy implications.
Specifically in the paper a linear regression model is developed, able to determine the causal effects exercised by a set of variables on the number of technology startups in a Region.
The research makes use of data from Italian Regions, through a census survey of the main players, based on a review of secondary sources. The substantial transformation of such territories, experienced above all after the emanation of the Law 221/2012, provides greater implications on the institutional based supports effectiveness.
