We, as the preparatory school (hazırlık) teachers, have to face with the challenge of engaging students who just graduated from high school to read long academic texts that the students themselves usually find tiring and boring. Many students struggle to concentrate on the reading tasks based on long academic texts. I would like to share with the participants a practical method to engage the students and turn long and "boring" texts into fun. In my presentation, first I'd like to focus on classical approaches to reading texts by showing examples from coursebooks and some typical reading tasks. I will then show the participants my method. I will continue by explaining how easily the set up is prepared. If all the conditions are suitable, depending on the demand from the participants, I will be ready to demonstrate a mini demo of this method. The participants, particularly working in prep-programmes, will go away with an extremely practical and fun method which is so simple to set up for any level of students.
Summary
This presentation offers you a practical method which can be used to engage students to do reading tasks based on long academic texts and have fun. The participants will be shown how to turn any reading for any level into fun. [ view full abstract ]
