The transition from compulsory to non-compulsory education poses many challenges for learners. Perhaps the major challenge is the expectation that from this point onwards their academic, professional and personal success is predicated on the adoption of the attitudes, skills and competencies of self-motivated and self-directed lifelong learners.
For many learners higher education seems to represent the start of their journey into lifelong learning and it is the role of their teachers to help guide their initial travels. This workshop will explore the teacher-led development and active use of Lifelong Learning Statements (LLS) by Sabancı University School of Languages (SUSL) in order to promote and actively embed lifelong learning within teaching and learning activities.
It is intended that participants will leave the workshop with an understanding of how LLS were developed in the context of SUSL, with reference to related research, and how this process may be applied to the participant’s own teaching context. Participants will also explore how the statements are, and can be: practically embedded into the everyday life of learning by learners themselves; used by teachers wishing to encourage lifelong learning; considered when making curriculum level decisions.
All stages of the workshop will include activities which involve and engage the participants.
Outline:
• A rationale for actively promoting lifelong learning
• Developing LLS
• Sharing and exploring the SUSL LLS
• Actively and practically using LLS for learners, teachers and for informing curriculum decisions
• Applying LLS to other teaching and learning contexts
• Questions & Answers
