Mindfulness and compassion: its application within 21st Century Healthcare.

Ms Kathleen Neenan

Kathleen is an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing & Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin where she has co-ordinated courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
She qualified as a General and Children’s Nurse in St Vincent University Hospital and The Children’s University Hospital Temple Street. She has worked clinically in a range of settings including management positions before embarking on an educational route. As an educator, she has worked in a variety of teaching posts at St James’s Hospital, Dublin, Beaumont Hospital, Dublin and The Children’s University Hospital, Dublin. During that time Kathleen has acted as Principal Teacher at The Children’s University Hospital, Temple Street.
Her primary degree is from University College Dublin and her MSc was awarded from the University of Manchester. More recently she has began to explore and practise mindfulness. Mindfulness practise can significantly contribute to our physical and mental health and overall quality of life. Kathleen has studied Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) with Florence Meleo-Meyer and Saki Santorelli, from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and completed a specialist teacher training course in MBSR and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) from the Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice in the University of Bangor. She continues to attend professional mindfulness training and retreats and adheres to the Good Practice Guidelines set out by the UK Network of Mindfulness Teachers.
Kathleen was trained by Kristen Neff and Christopher Germer in the first European Teacher Training for the Mindful Self Compassion programme (MSC ) from the University of California. Kathleen has also studied with the IMA with Dutch professionals Dr Erik van Den Brink and Frits Koster who developed the Mindful Based Compassion Living programme. She is qualified to teach the MBCL programme.
Kathleen has been an invited speaker on mindfulness, mindful parenting, mindfulness in education and compassion to community groups, businesses and schools. Kathleen has facilitated talks and workshops on MBSR ,MBCT, MSC and MBCL.
Kathleen uses her mindfulness and compassion training in her work as an educator in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin.
