Promote the Use of Secondary Materials by Education and Information

The major obstacle for use of secondary materials is a lack of knowledge. Also, the common language is missing between the material producers, authorities, designers and constructors. There is a need for education especially for designers, and for comprehensive information on technical performance of secondary products in typical applications. To promote the use, new design and construction manuals have been recently published in Finland, and the common quality guidelines and requirements are composed for these materials. However, these new guidelines are not put into practice without education and interaction between parties involved. Still a huge amount of parties has a limited, if any, knowledge on these new promising alternative materials.

In Finland, in order to answer to this demand, a pilot university level course on secondary materials in earth construction has been organized as a joint operation of two technical universities, industry and authorities. The participants are representing both present authorities and experts, and the young future professionals.

In the workshop, the experiences are shared among other education and promotion organizers and ideas for the further development are gathered. Some students from the pilot course are presenting their poster work in the workshop. The experience on promoting and education practices implemented in other countries are welcome.
