The UUMA2 program intends to bring about new development in the following fields: handbooks and guidelines, process from waste to product, designing and acquisition process for end users, environmental acceptability and development of national legislation, technical acceptability and dimensioning methods and practices, large scale of demonstration projects and developing new products and processes. Also local co-operation projects in Finland has been succesful. Using reclaimed materials in earthworks is being encouraged to decrease the exploitation of non-renewable natural resources e.g. aggregates. Aggregates can be replaced with these reclaimed materials acquired from surplus soil, industrial by-products and waste, mildly contaminated soil and sediments and reclaimed aggregates from existing earth structures. These materials are called UUMA-materials and they can be used either in earthworks, in the raw or as components to replace or to improve the properties of non-renewable rock material. There are numerous applications for UUMA materials in various sectors of infrastructure construction. To increase the usage in those applications, the materials must have design guidelines for their appropriate applications, they must be commercialised and CE marked or otherwise authorized, and the construction guidelines for the materials must be included in the Finnish general specifications for infrastructural construction works (InfraRYL). UUMA2 program has started on 2013 and it has finished on 2017.
