He specializes in site- and landscape-level habitat assessments and resource impact analysis, and offers expertise in ecological and rare species evaluations, avian/bat risk assessments, and resource compensation planning for diverse projects ranging from transportation to energy development.Steve has provided expert witness testimonies and third-party reviews in both the US and Canada and served on Federal and State advisory committees and stakeholder groups involving diverse resource issues, including protection of forest birds and raptors, habitat fragmentation, vernal pools, and mitigation banking. He has taught rare species courses for agency and industry staff, and authored publications involving habitat fragmentation, forest biodiversity, and bat migration. Relative to the wind industry, Steve has designed and directly managed avian and bat studies throughout the US since 2004. He previously served as Principal Investigator of a multi-year study of Mexican free tailed bats using combined radar, IR, and acoustic technologies, designed, and served as Principal Investigator of a multi-year offshore acoustic bat research study within the Atlantic coast and Great Lakes regions on behalf of the DOE, and as PI of a comparative acoustic analysis involving terrestrial and offshore bat data, funded by the Bureau of Ocean Management.
