Synthesis of Bat Curtailment Studies

Jeff Gruver

Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc.

Jeff has 20 years of experience studying bat ecology in North America. Jeff’s primary emphasis at WEST is to assist clients in understanding and managing risk to bats that arise from otherwise lawful activities. Much of his work focuses on wind power, and includes studies to assess impacts to bats from wind power and studies designed to test methods of reducing bat fatalities at operating facilities. Jeff’s vita includes studies to test the effectiveness of acoustic deterrents and of various turbine operational strategies in reducing bat fatalities, as well as investigations into how bats interact with wind turbines. Jeff earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics in 1993 from Penn State University and an M.S. in Zoology and Physiology from the University of Wyoming in 2002. Jeff has authored or co-authored scientific publications on topics ranging from species conservation to factors influencing bat fatality risks at wind energy installations, and he is honored to serve the larger bat research and conservation community as the incoming President of the Northeast Bat Working Group and as a member of the Steering Committee for the North American Bat Conservation Alliance.

Abstract

Bat fatalities at wind energy facilities have been widely known since 2003. To reduce bat fatalities operational minimization strategies have been developed and implemented with successful results. In 2015, voluntary... [ view full abstract ]
