This poster presentation will examine various controversies that surround the use of recreational drugs in sports. In particular, the NFL drug policy (Painkillers v. Marijuana, and other major drugs), athletic performance under the influence in terms of ethics and fair play, and a look at recreational drug issues in other professional sports. Pro sports CBA’s will also be addressed as there is often a lack of uniformity in drug related suspensions. Should NFL players be allowed to use medical marijuana as opposed to painkillers and specifically toradol? Recently NFL players themselves have been pushing the NFL to allow this use. Punishments and drug testing policies of the other major sports leagues will also be examined. Future considerations to be addressed include potential rule changes in regards to the sport legality of medical marijuana, and the consideration of other drugs as well.
