One of the objectives of Advance Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) is to reduce or eliminate driver errors. The systems are focused mainly on the possibility of a driving intervention and the subsequent avoidance of a possible collision. Standard ADAS systems on the market warn the driver visually or acoustically after detecting a collision situation. Therefore, pedestrians or cyclists are not warned although their response to the warning by an oncoming vehicle could effectively prevent a traffic accident. 

The paper provides a forensic view of real traffic accidents of pedestrians and their behaviour before the collision. The study of real pedestrian behaviour focuses on the implementation of warning exterior signals of a vehicle for the purposes of the ADAS system.

The study used a set of more than 200 real traffic accidents of a car and a pedestrian. The accidents were recorded by  vehicle dash board cameras or CCTV cameras.  A set of such accidents provides a realistic statistical view of pedestrian behaviour before a collision and pedestrian reaction to an oncoming vehicle.

The study provides a statistical view of the fundamental aspects of the course of a traffic accident: weather conditions, traffic situation, driving style, type of walking etc. The analysis of the data shows possible pedestrian behaviour immediately before a collision, the response time before the collision and the pedestrian’s reaction (stopping, slowing down, stepping back etc.) in cases where a pedestrian was not warned by an acoustic signal.
