Background: The prevalence of overweight and obesity in many countries has shown persistent increase. The characteristics of the environment in which people live play a significant role in modulating these rates. Objectives: To describe the prevalence of overweight and obesity and examine their associations with food store and places for physical activity (PA) in the neighborhood among adults living in urban areas.
Methods: Household survey in Belo Horizonte, Brazil (2008-2009). Body mass index (BMI) was calculated from weight and height measured and classified as normal (18.5-24.9 kg/m2), overweight (25.0-29.9 kg/m2 for adults and ≥27 kg/m2 for elderly) and obesity (≥30 kg/m2 for adults. The neighborhood was defined by buffers of 500 meters around the residence of each respondent. The number of places to purchase food (hypermarkets, supermarkets, convenience stores or grocery) and private places for PA practice in the neighborhood of each participant was quantified. Multinomial regression analyses were used stratified by sex, adjusted by age, marital status, education and household income used. Results: The sample consisted of 3,768 individuals 18 years and over. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 37.0% and 14.6%, respectively, highly among women. For women, obesity was associated with: of food stores (OR = 1.05; 95% CI: 1.01-1.10) and places for physical activity (OR = 0.90; 95% CI: 0.82 to 0.99).
Implications: The results suggest that the environment has different influences according to gender and most promising strategies to confront this epidemic should involve changes in the built environment.
Key words: food environment, obesity, food access, physical activity environment, neighborhood.
