To promote rational use of drug, it is important to assess drug use pattern. The aim of this study was to assess the drug prescription patterns in public private sector.
A descriptive, quantitative and cross-sectional survey was conducted to determine current prescribing practices in selected areas. The sample was selected using systematic random sampling. 680 prescriptions were reviewed retrospectively for 2-months period from August to September 2014. Data collected from 136 public private sector doctors’ prescribed 680 prescriptions.
Particulars of patients were written correctly in 58% prescriptions. Chief complaints, on examination findings and investigations were written in 76%, 43% and 13% prescriptions respectively. Provisional diagnosis was written in 49% prescription and 3% was written but not understandable. Both clinical feature and provisional diagnosis were absent in 5% prescriptions. Treatment was compatible 97.64% among the prescriptions containing provisional diagnosis.
On the basis of this study it is assumed that necessary steps should be taken to orient both public and private drug prescribers to practice rationally correct prescription writing.
